Harmonizing Definitions and Methods to Estimate Deforestation at the Lacandona Tropical Region in Southern Mexico

چکیده
Deforestation is a major factor reducing natural habitats, leading to tropical ecosystems and biodiversity loss worldwide. The Lacandona region in southern Mexico holds one of the largest fragments rainforest North America. We evaluated deforestation harmonizing concepts methodologies. An international (FAO definition), governmental (national regional definition with applications at different scales were analyzed harmonized two classification methods (likelihood spectral angle mapper (SAM)). used 2015 2018 Landsat 8 images, likelihood SAM classifications applied for FAO definitions deforestation. Overall, best classifier quantity was (kappa: 0.87 0.70, overall accuracy: 91.8 80.4%, disagreement: 4.1 10 %, respectively). allocation disagreement only showed exchange between classes. Nevertheless, they did not show differences classifiers, although had less than 2018: exchange, 4.1% SAM; shift: 0% SAM. Maps based on that detected 11,441 ha (40,538 51,979 ha, 11,914 (37,152 49,066 Further, 3387 more according 37,152 2913 (51,979 49,066, concluded implementation programs requires estimations careful selection methods.

Tropical forests are a unique environmental resource that provide numerous global benefits. Of the world's biomes, they provide the greatest biological diversity of plants and animals. It is estimated that these forests contain at least fifty percent of the world's animal species and almost seventy five percent of the world's plant species. Increased deforestation is likely to reduce this biodi...

We combine mixed-methods research with integrated agent-based modeling to understand land change and economic decision making in the United States and Mexico. This work demonstrates how sustainability science benefits from combining integrated agent-based modeling (which blends methods from the social, ecological, and information sciences) and mixed-methods research (which interleaves multiple ...
متن کاملDevelopment Policies and Tropical Deforestation in the Southern Yucatán Peninsula: Centralized and Decentralized Approaches
It is well established that for multiple biophysical contexts there are legacies of past government policies in present land conditions. Despite this recognition, however, investigation of ongoing tropical deforestation dynamics often de-emphasizes the past. The case of the southern Yucatán peninsula demonstrates the need for historical analysis in identifying key drivers of deforestation. The ...
متن کاملEcology: The Tropical Deforestation Debt
Tropical deforestation is a significant cause of global carbon emissions and biodiversity loss. A new study shows that deforestation today leaves a carbon and biodiversity debt to be paid over subsequent years. This has potentially profound implications for forest conservation.
